Le Garrec included in France squad for Summer Series

Nolann Le Garrec

France have named their squad for the Six Nations Under-20s Summer Series with scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec among those in the 37-man squad.

The Racing 92 scrum-half missed the entirety of the Six Nations Under-20s through injury but has since returned and established himself as first choice for his club helping them to the Top 14 play-offs.

And he is one of the standout names in an experienced squad which also features Bordeaux full-back Louis Bielle-Biarrey, who has a European hat-trick to his name this season, and Stade Français fly-half Léo Barré, one of the star performers for Les Bleuets earlier this year.

France finished second in the Six Nations Under-20s, their only defeat coming to a last-gasp try against Grand Slam champions Ireland in Round 2.

The squad will meet for a preparation camp in Nice next week, while manager Jean-Marc Béderède explained that the size of the group was in part due to the possibility of players earning a call-up to the senior side for their tour of Japan.

He said: “We are looking at a form of continuity in putting together this squad over the course of the season with players who we have seen, either during the Six Nations Under-20s, or with the Under-20s development side on their tour of Ireland. There are also some players who performed well during the Six Nations Under-18s festival.

“The group is also made of players who we knew from the start, in agreement with the clubs, that they would be needed by their professional teams.

“The extended squad is also due to the fact that some could be called up by the France staff for the match against the Barbarians or the tour of Japan, which would be great news.”

France will kick off their campaign against Ireland in Verona before matches against England and South Africa.
